Cardboard Boat Race Today

Due to rain and heavy wind, the Cardboard Boat Race scheduled for Friday, May 24 has been moved to Wednesday, May 29 beginning with the Parade of Boats at 12:30 p.m. and the race at 1:00 p.m.

In the annual end-of-year event, seven teams of Upper School students will race in colorful, life-size boats across McDonogh’s Duck Pond. Each team was given nine sheets of industrial-grade cardboard, a gallon of glue, tape, paint, paintbrushes and three weeks of time to build a boat that can support a crew as it crosses the pond.

At the end of the regatta, judges, wearing cardboard hats, will present one lucky team with the coveted "Best Overall Boat" award, affectionately known as the "BOB." The Poseidon Adventure goes to the best sinker. Yes, the trophies are cardboard, too!

This year's cardboard creations include: Princess Boat, Higgins Boat (World War II Landing Craft), Computer (Technology Device) Theme Boat, Police Box Boat, Mer-boat (mermaids), Duck-billed Platypus Boat and Banana Boat.
