Diversity Club Hosts Powerful Conference

On Thursday, February 16, the Diversity Leadership Club, D4M, hosted an all-day, regional diversity conference in the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center. The purpose was to bring area students together to explore the theme “Valuing Individuality” and discuss the “Core 8” cultural identifiers: age, ability, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.

The event was attended by 130 students from eight schools, including Boys’ Latin, Bryn Mawr, Garrison Forest, Gilman, Maryvale, McDonogh, Park School, and Roland Park Country School.

The day began with multiple “get-to-know-you-activities” before participants broke into small groups for difficult and thoughtful conversations lead by D4M members and McDonogh student peer facilitators. Topics ranged from “Alternate Family Structures” and “The Race of Yourself and Others” to “Exploring Ability in Our Culture of Perfectionism” and “Diversity in the Media.”

The conference ended on an emotionally intense note with an open microphone session in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre, where students reflected on their own experiences at the conference. Due to the outpouring of positive feedback, D4M, led by juniors Amber C. and Daniel F., plans on hosting the conference again next year.
