Lynn McKain Honored with Distinguished Service Award
In the presence of family, friends, and colleagues,
longtime Director of Communications Lynn McKain was
presented with this year’s Alumni Association Distinguished
Service Award during the annual winter faculty and staff
meeting on February 15.
The DSA is given to an individual in the McDonogh family
who, in the opinion of the awards committee, has devoted his
or her time and efforts most generously on behalf of
McDonogh students, the School, and the Alumni Association.
In the selection of the recipient, particular emphasis is
placed on "behind the scene" activities recognized by
McDonogh School, the Alumni Association, by other groups, or
the community at large.
Previous DSA award recipient and Director of Religious
Studies, Character, and Service John Grega honored Lynn with
a very thoughtful and emotional tribute. He began by saying,
“For the past twelve years, McDonogh has been graced with
its own artful storyteller, one who paints beauty and
delight, not with pigment and canvas, but with the more
evanescent medium of words. A consummate storyteller whose
palette of colors emerges from the magical moments of the
school she loves so much, whose brush is bristled with
emotion and passion and a knowing, loving heart.”
John continued, “Lynn understands. She understands
McDonogh; she understands the people who make McDonogh what
it is today, from smallest to tallest; she understands the
remarkable heritage and history that have helped shape
McDonogh into its current incarnation. Such understanding
comes only with exquisite attention and selfless listening.
The tribute was full of deserving praise from students,
friends, McDonogh associates, and colleagues from other
schools. Comments such as “When all hell breaks loose, she’s
the one you want in the room” and “For Lynn, every week is
Spirit Week.”
In conclusion, John said, “If there is ‘No Place Like
McDonogh,’ it is due in no small part to the service and
dedication that Lynn has expended on our behalf.”
As Lynn approached the stage to receive her award, she
was greeted with a well-deserved standing ovation and never-ending applause.
