Paul Everett Smith, McDonogh School physical education teacher and coach from 1974 to 1990 and the first African American member of the school's faculty, passed away on September 3, 2012.
Paul's commitment to McDonogh's PE department was substantial. He created programs for Lower School students, as well as fifth and sixth graders. Paul also coached JV football and Middle School basketball for 12 years. He was perhaps best known for coaching the varsity basketball team for 16 years, during which time his record was 236 wins and 135 losses. His teams won the MSA-B Conference championship a total of six times. In addition, Paul won the Coaches Sportsmanship Award and was selected three times as Coach of the Year by The Baltimore Sun. In 2001, he was inducted into McDonogh's Athletic Hall of Fame.
Paul also coached at Sidwell Friends, Dunbar High School, Pikesville High School, Towson University, and Western Tech, where he reached his milestone 400th career win in 2007.
Former Associate Headmaster and colleague Hugh Burgess wrote, "During his career at McDonogh, Smith exercise[d] his profound gift for relating to students on a personal level and inspired athletes to do their best."
