Middle school students spent the month of May working on a community service project that honors veterans and active military service men and women. Sixth grader Patrick B.’s father is an Army Colonel deployed in Afghanistan. At a recent assembly, Patrick spoke about his family's sacrifices and how they try to help his father when he is away.
To let the soldiers know that their service is appreciated, the Middle School decided to send a giant care package to Patrick’s father to share with the more than 400 men serving under his command. After writing thank you notes and birthday cards and collecting packs of gum, cookies, powdered drink mix, writing paper, envelopes, and toilet tissue, students assembled 31 boxes that were sent to Afghanistan on Thursday, May 17. Patrick’s father and members of his troop personally thanked the students for their generosity via skype during a middle school assembly on Friday, May 25.
In addition to this project, students also collected more than $1000 to donate to Products for Good, an organization that supports veterans who have returned from military service. Walter Reed National Military Medical Center will receive 100 percent of the middle school donation to help wounded veterans and their families with long-term care.
