Shining Example of Caring

On September 20 and 21, parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, and staff lined up at the Kelly Center to have their shoes shined by third graders. The students set up the temporary shoeshine stand to raise money for "Blankets of Hope," an annual third grade effort to help patients with cancer.

The children learned the craft of polishing shoes and the importance of helping others while reading the book The Shoeshine Girl by Claude Bulla. Working side by side, the third graders applied polish with their fingers and used an assortment of rags to buff loafers, heels, and lace-ups to a glistening shine. They were rewarded with generous tips from the steady stream of customers.

At the end of the two days, the students raised more than $1, 500. "The money will go toward the cost of material for fleece blankets that we are making for cancer patients," said third grade coordinator Margaret Bitz. "The children will make the blankets with their own little hands, and then later this fall we will present them to The Red Devils, an organization that provides services to breast cancer patients.”

Bitz introduced the project in 2009 and it continues to grow. This year, the third grade class is dedicating “Blankets of Hope” to Lynn McKain, McDonogh’s longtime Director of Communications, who recently passed away after a four-year struggle with breast cancer. Last fall, Mrs. McKain was the recipient of one of the handmade blankets, and she told the children, firsthand, just how meaningful their gift is to women who are sick.

"The kids are so happy about how many people they are going to be able to help in Lynn’s honor, Bitz said. The support has been unbelievable.”
