“Step stomp” dances and songs entertained lower school students and family members during Nancy Lewis’s second grade class play, Renewable Energy, on Wednesday, May 16. The original play explores energy sources and asks the question, "What makes a light turn on?"
Students went back in time to explain the use of fossil fuels and the hardships of children who worked in coal mines 100 years ago. The “step stomp” is based on a Gumboot dance that originated with miners in South Africa. As the students spoke about energy sources for today and the future, the focus was on solar and wind-powered energy. One song’s refrain left the audience with lyrics to think about: “The choices that we make right now, will change things for tomorrow."
