McDonogh’s kindergartners have spent the year learning how to show compassion toward all kinds of animals, from bugs and birds to homeless cats, dogs, and horses neglected by their owners. The year-long project has involved both in-class learning as well as field trips.
The K1 Eagles have been devoted to feeding birds, squirrels, and chipmunks, as well as saving the occasional bugs who wandered into the classroom for a visit. Their commitment to animals included a trip to the Baltimore Humane Society in Reisterstown, where they learned how the animals are cared for while waiting to be adopted by a loving family. During the visit, the students donated blankets, food, toys, supplies, and homemade dog biscuits.
The K2 Eagles have spent time learning about conservation efforts and studying the characteristics, habitats, and environmental importance of bats and birds. Along with their fourth grade reading buddies, each child constructed a window bird houses, which they took home to enjoy. They also donated a birdhouse to the Irvine Nature Center while visiting the environmental education site. Before the end of the school year, the youngsters plan to donate a new bird 'habitat' to McDonogh’s very own Roots Farm.
The K3 Eagles turned their attention to helping horses. They visited Days End Farm Horse Rescue (DEFHR) in Woodbine, a special place that rehabilitates neglected and abused horses and then puts them up for adoption. It was the perfect setting for students to learn what is involved in caring for horses, from feeding and grooming to medical care, and to witness a true example of compassion toward animals.
