Students of German Earn Awards

Gluckwunsch! (congratulations) to twelve McDonogh students of German, who were honored for their high achievement on the National High School German Test. The group was recognized along with other students from the area at the 2013 Awards Ceremony for Maryland Students of German on Sunday, May 12 at the Baltimore Zion Lutheran Church.

Across the country, a total of 22,000 tests were administered for German levels 2, 3, and 4. Area students who do particularly well are honored annnually at a ceremony hosted by the MD/DC Metro chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). The ceremony also receives significant support from the German Society of Maryland, along with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Goethe-Institut DC. This year, as in the past, McDonogh students fared very well, and earned (as a collective) more awards than any other school with the exception of the German Language Courses at the German School in Washington, DC.

Award winners for the National Test were presented with certificates, gift bags, and checks ranging from $50-$100 based on their cluster of percentile rank on the test. Jennifer H. ‘14 and Andrea B. ‘13 were also given special "named" prizes for their achievement. Jennifer, who earned a 99.43 percentile on the German 4 test, was given the 2013 Langenscheidt Award, and Andrea was given one of three awards known as "Student Achievement Awards of the German Embassy."
