There is no question that McDonogh’s athletic teams are a force among the competition in the Baltimore area. The 18th Annual Athletic Awards evening held Monday, June 2 in the Horn Theatre showcased the breadth of talent among the student competitors.
Athletic Director Mickey Deegan began the evening saying, “The Eagles had an unbelievable sports year. People often ask how do we do it? What are the key factors to your success? We believe these four ingredients are why: We have great kids who play more than one sport, coaches who love what they do, facilities that are state of the art and mirror the best college campuses…and senior leadership.”
Then she shared the impressive statistics that tell the story:
During the Athletic Awards, students in each sport were recognized, having been selected by their coaches to receive the Coaches Award and their teammates to receive the Eagle Award. A varsity letter was presented to faculty member/soccer coach Steve Nichols who is leaving McDonogh after 20 years. Special awards and honors were also presented during the ceremony, including: The Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Service Award and the Four Year Awards presented to athletes who have played on a varsity team for four consecutive years. The Alec Cosgarea ‘13 Honor was presented to Will C.; and 28 students will receive their Golden Eagle awards at Commencement.
