Boat Builders Go Down With Their Ships
It was sink and swim for the 10 entries in the 25th Annual Cardboard Boat Race, held Friday, May 23 on the duck pond. Part art project, part physics experiment, each team began their boat building weeks before with the same raw materials: nine sheets of industrial grade cardboard, a limited amount of adhesive, and paint.
Race afternoon began with a boat parade from the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center attended by kindergarteners and their junior class buddies, the rest of the Upper School, faculty, staff, and families. The first heat featured the following boats: Hrolf Ganger (Viking), Hibbidyheehaw (Duck Dynasty), Banana Float, USS Liberty, and Pokeball. Participants in the second heat were: Muddle PTPBNBP Battle (Dr. Seuss), Bob Marley (Jamaican Bobsled), Leonidas, Anime, and The Queen Bey (Beyonce).
Between the elimination heats and the finals, science teachers Rob Smoot, Eric Conn, Michael Ferguson, and Jenn Singer launched their Space Shuttle Boat, ridden by Martin Schmidt. Then, any boat that could still float took to the water for a second time. As the waterlogged boats headed toward the finish line, a number began to sink and several were pushed and dragged to shore by their passengers. Once all the soggy cardboard was hauled onto dry land and relegated to the dumpsters, participants gathered for the award ceremony. Cardboard (of course!) trophies, were presented by Cardboard Boat Race Founder and Former Head of the Visual Art Department Lee Boot. Among the award categories were: most artistic, biggest payload, and fastest time. Congratulations to the Jamaican Bobsled team aka Bob Marley on winning the coveted grand prize – the BOB (Best Overall Boat).
