Do you know the correct answer to this geography question: The Taklimakan Desert, home to the Uyghur people, is located north of the Kunlun Mountains in which Asian country?
At least two Middle School students, eighth graders Katie T. and Casey S., both know the answer is: China. Katie and Casey were the two finalist in McDonogh’s Middle School Geography Bee held Friday, January 10. The contest, which started with 27 students from fifth to eighth grade, is a school level qualifying event for the National Geographic Bee held in May.
The question that determined the winner was: The Donets Basin is an industrial area shared by Russia and which neighboring country to the west? Katie got it right with her answer: Ukraine. She was named “champion” and awarded a medal from the National Geographic Society presented by Social Studies teacher Craig Copeland. Katie now must take a written test in order to move on to the state finals. Congratulations to Katie and all the contestants.
