When it comes to the caliber of McDonogh’s debate team there is no argument—they are one of the strongest high school teams in the nation. Throughout the academic year, teams practice debating a topic and then compete in interscholastic tournaments to advance. Currently, McDonogh’s team of more than 20 students is ranked 26th out of more than 1080 teams who have been accepted to compete nationally.
The team has spent the year honing their arguments both in favor of and opposed to the issue: Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase its economic engagement towards Cuba, Mexico or Venezuela. Juniors Alyssa R. and Ryan E. have performed exceptionally well, advancing McDonogh through the tournaments and toward the goal of winning the prestigious David P. Baker Award for Season Long Excellence, which will be given at the National Debate Coaches Association (NDCA) Championships in April. McDonogh coach Daryl Burch is especially proud of the ranking saying, “I was pleased to see us ranked in the top 50 as juniors. I am really proud of these two and their work ethic and leadership to the younger kids.”
