Olivia Grant Awarded Teaching Chair

When Headmaster Charlie Britton announced Olivia Grant as the recipient of The Howard C. "Dutch" Eyth Endowed Teaching Chair, the Middle School math teacher couldn’t have been more surprised; and her co-workers couldn’t have been happier for her. The announcement came at McDonogh’s winter faculty/staff meeting on Thursday, February 27 in the Horn Theatre.

Before Britton revealed that Grant had been selected for the honor, he shared, “This teacher has been described over the years as one who has helped students ‘crunch the numbers’ all year, and one who has been such a positive influence, re-engaging students in math and jazzing them up about it.”

He continued, “From tutoring sessions, numerous emails, and study guides, one parent states, ‘her expertise was always evident and her actions showed that she genuinely cared about our child and wanted her to succeed.’”

“A former colleague described her as one who spots problems and develops solutions. She describes herself as someone who sets high expectations for all, and whose favorite words of wisdom are ‘knowledge is power and studying is the key,’” Britton said.

Grant, who joined the McDonogh community in 1982, has taught sixth grade math the entire time. With her children on hand for the occasion, Britton listed her many accomplishments both in the classroom and as an integral part of the Summer Programs. He said, “She wears titles such as devoted advisor, competitive Middle School swimming coach, trusted colleague, and loving mother to Reggie ’03, Tiffany ‘05, and Jordan ‘14.

The Howard C. "Dutch" Eyth Endowed Teaching Chair is one of six endowed teaching chairs at McDonogh, which recognize great teaching as well as commitment to the McDonogh community.
