Pete Welch Named National Prep Wrestling Coach of the Year, Team Scores Big

Pete Welch was named National Prep Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association during the National Prep Championships at Lehigh University over the weekend.

The Eagles finished third out of more than 100 teams in the competition, and eight McDonogh wrestlers placed in the top 10: Myles M. ’15 (champion), Cameron H. ’15 (second place), Mike S. ’15 (third place), Wyatt C. ’15 (third place), Quinn D. ’17 (fourth place), Toby H. ‘14 (fourth place), TK M. ’16 (seventh place), and Sam M. ’16 (seventh place). John Gordon, Chairman of the National Prep Wrestling Board, delivered the following remarks about Pete when presenting him with the honor.

"Pete Welch came to McDonogh after a stellar college career at University of North Carolina where he was an All American in 1991. He started coaching in 1993 and has been head coach for the past 20 years.

His leadership at McDonogh in the past 20 years has turned the program into a national power. Pete has coached 10 national champions and 57 state champions. His teams have won 5 state Championships and 7 MIAA conference Tournament Championships and 9 Dual meet Championships.

Pete has run the McDonogh Wrestling Club for the past 20 years where he has coached kids from all over the state of Maryland. In addition, he has been a coach for the Maryland National Freestyle and Greco team since 1994. Pete is always trying to grow within the sport of wrestling and is a phenomenal advocate for the Independent school wrestling community.

His hard work and dedication, along with his character and integrity has lead McDonogh to be consistently recognized nationally over the past decade. Please help me congratulate Pete Welch with this tremendous accomplishment of National Prep Coach of the year."
