Seniors Buzzing With Knowledge About Bees
Question: Are bees are more valuable for honey or pollinating crops?
Ask any senior taking the elective, In Good Taste: The Literature of Food,
they will answer confidently: “The value of bees pollinating fruits, vegetables,
and legumes is 10 times the value of honey produced. Natural pollinators are
disappearing rapidly and each year we become more dependent on honey bees
for many of our daily foods.”
On Thursday, September 4 the class went on an excursion to McDonogh’s
beehives, a part of Roots Farm, where beekeepers Darryl and Courtney Gonzalez,
the parents of four current McDonogh students, explained the fascinating world
inside the bee colonies. After donning protective clothing, the students felt
comfortable handling the honeycombs covered in bees and dripping with golden
honey. The honey will be harvested in early-October and available at the Fall
Festival.
