Silverman '14 Added to Wall of Olympians

A plaque honoring Eagles swimmer Ian Silverman ‘14 was unveiled on McDonogh’s “Wall of Olympians” in the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center during a special ceremony on Thursday, May 1. Ian won gold in the men's 400m freestyle event at the 2012 Paralympics in London, setting a new record time: 4:04.91.

During the presentation, Swim Coach and Director of Aquatics Scott Ward, said “Ian’s career as a world class athlete is really just beginning. He is going to continue to improve. He is going to set more world records, and I truly believe we will have to take this plaque down in a few years for some updates!”

Ian joins the ranks of eight other McDonogh Olympians:

  • Godfrey K. Kelly ‘47, Yachting
  • Basil T. Kelly '49, Yachting
  • David A.C. Kelly '51, Yachting
  • Montague R. Higgs '58, Yachting
  • Bruce Davidson '68, Equestrian-Three Day Event
  • Steve K. Kelly '73, Yachting
  • Pamela H. Shriver '79, Tennis-Women's Doubles

In closing, Coach Ward, said “It has been an honor to coach Ian and have him on our team. He contributed not only in performance but also with commitment and leadership, and we will miss him tremendously when he graduates."

Ian is headed to the University of Southern California this fall, where he will continue his studies and swim for the Trojans.
