Summer Carillon Concert Series
Carillonneurs from across the United States and Canada will give a series of free concerts at McDonogh School’s Tagart Memorial Chapel on Friday evenings, July 4 through August 1, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public and will take place rain or shine.

- July 11: Doug Gefvert, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania
- July 18: Tim Sleep, Naperville, Illinois
- July 25: Buck Lyon-Vaiden, McDonogh School
- August 1: John Widmann, Frederick, Maryland
Bring a picnic supper, lawn chairs and blankets, or listen from your parked car. Seating is also available in the chapel. Children are welcome to use the playground behind Elderkin Hall. Tours of the bell tower will be available after the concerts on July 4, July 11, July 18 and July 25.
The McDonogh carillon, one of approximately 180 in North America, consists of 48 bells, ranging in weight from 24 pounds to 1.6 tons. It is one of only two of its size in Maryland. The bells were cast and tuned in the Netherlands by the Petit and Fritsen Foundry, which dates back to 1660.
A carillon is connected with mechanical wires to a keyboard and a pedalboard. The keyboard is split into two rows of spindle-like wooden keys that are struck by half- closed fists. The pedalboard, similar to that of an organ, controls the two lowest octaves. Carillon music includes classical, hymns, folk, popular melodies, and original compositions.
