Geography Bee Puts Middle Schoolers to the Test
The morning of Friday, January 9 began with 28 middle schoolers
standing on the Horn Theatre stage prepared to put their geography knowledge
to the test. An hour later, only two contestants in the Middle School Geography
Bee were still standing. Seventh graders Nicholas Z. and Riley H. faced off against
each other in the Bee’s championship round which consisted of the following
three questions:
Q: Jack London’s classic novel The Call of the Wild tells
the story
of a pet dog that learns to survive in the wild after being kidnapped. This story
takes place in the Yukon in which country?
A: Canada
Q: Disney’s blockbuster movie Frozen is set in the
fictional land of
Arendelle, which was largely inspired by the country of Norway. Norway is
located on which European peninsula?
A: Scandinavian Peninsula
Q: National Geographic explorer Shivani Bhalla works with
warriors in the local Samburu community to protect lions south of Lake Turkana
in which African country?
A: Kenya
In the end, Riley H. was named “champion” and awarded a medal from the
National Geographic Society presented by social studies teacher Craig Copeland.
Riley now must take a written test in order to move on to the state finals.
Congratulations to all the contestants from fifth to eighth grade for participating
in the school-level qualifying event for the National Geographic Bee which will be
held in May.
