McDonogh on Top in Ray Oliver Wrestling Tournament

The 43rd Annual Ray Oliver Invitational Wrestling Tournament at McDonogh School, December 4 and 5, was won by a “ridiculously close” margin--a half point. Despite winning only one individual title (Sam M. ’16) over the two-day tournament, the McDonogh Eagles edged out the Smyrna Eagles 161.0 to 160.5. The win was the fifth consecutive tournament victory for McDonogh.

According to McDonogh’s Head Wrestling Coach Pete Welch, the two teams are well matched. “Last year we beat them in the tournament by 4.5 points, still ridiculously close. However, they beat us head-to-head in the dual meet in January. We have developed a pretty friendly rivalry with them,” said Welch.

In addition to Smyrna High School, the Delaware State Wrestling Champs, the Ray Oliver Wrestling Invitational included 16 other schools from the mid-Atlantic region. The tournament is named in honor of Raymond B. Oliver '40, a beloved, longtime math teacher, coach, and class dean. Oliver was an outstanding wrestler for McDonogh and the Naval Academy in his student days.
