Thanking and Supporting Veterans
This year on Veterans Day, the McDonogh community was invited to reflect
on
alumni who are veterans and to thank them for their service to our nation.
Students in kindergarten through twelfth grade, faculty, and staff wrote letters of
thanks to McDonogh alumni who served our country. They also wrote to alumni
currently on active duty and to our most recent graduates who are studying at
U.S. military academies. More than 280 letters of gratitude were written and
sent--a simple gesture for those whose service means so much.
In addition to the voluntary letter writing effort, guests from Baltimore
Station, a
therapeutic residential treatment program, spoke to the Upper School about
ways in which McDonogh can work in partnership with them to "support veterans
and others who are transitioning through the cycle of poverty, addiction, and
homelessness to self-sufficiency." Currently, under the direction of Lucy Dawson,
English teacher and Upper School Character Coordinator, each month, groups of
20 students visit with the veterans at Baltimore Station where they serve dinner,
eat with the men, and do an activity.
