Sisters Earn Prestigious Equestrian Awards
Equestrians and sisters Grace '18 (above left) and Sarah B. ’18
(above right) recently achieved impressive
victories in national competitions: The Alfred B. Maclay National
Championship at
the National Horse Show for Grace and the Washington International
Horse Show
(WIHS) Children’s Jumper Championship for Sarah. The girls started
riding at
McDonogh as lowers schoolers and are now members of the varsity
equestrian
team.
The Alfred B. Maclay National Championship has been held at the
National
Horse
Show since its inception in 1933. Qualifying for the competition
requires junior
riders to earn a minimum number of points at local and regional horse
shows,
culminating in a regional championship to determine the riders
invited to the
national finals in Lexington, Kentucky. In September, Grace and her
horse,
Fernway Park, qualified by winning the Region 3 Championship in
Tampa,
Florida. In November, Grace and 175 finalists competed in the
championship.
With a challenging course designed to distinguish the top riders,
Grace
accomplished some of the most difficult challenges and was awarded
the eighth
place ribbon.
Sarah and her 13-year-old Trakehner gelding, Herminas,
competed at the
WIHS
in the $10,000 Children’s Jumper Competition. The contest included
31 entries,
with 17 advancing to the jump-off. With the fastest and fault-free
second round
(30.51 seconds), Sarah and Herminas earned first place and received
the
prestigious H. Fenwick Kollock Memorial Perpetual Trophy.
