Middle Schoolers Impress at Geography Bee
The afternoon of Friday, January 6 was filled with excitement as 29 middle
schoolers competed for the title of McDonogh’s Geography Bee Champion.
Contestants earned a place in the competition after preliminary rounds in their
social studies classes. Standing on the stage in the Horn Theatre they were
quizzed on their knowledge of U.S., world, scientific, and current events
geography. As the questions became more difficult with each round, students
were eliminated. After more than an hour, only four contestants Willie B. ’21,
Rachel C. ’21, Sarah T. ’21, and Jackson S. ’24 remained. When the championship
round arrived, it was between Sarah and Rachel.
Sarah, the Middle School's reigning champion, was declared the winner
having correctly answered the question:
Archeologists have begun excavating an ancient lost city in the region called La
Mosquitia in which country north of Nicaragua? The answer is: Honduras.
Eighth grade Humanities Teacher and Master of Ceremonies Craig Copeland
explains, “Sarah, who won McDonogh’s Geography Bee in 2016, will now take a
written test to determine if she qualifies to compete at the state level in the
spring. A victory there would send her to the National Geography Bee finals held
in Washington, D.C. in May.”
Each year, more than 6,000,000 middle schoolers nationwide participate in
the
annual Geography Bee, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
