More than 130 McDonogh parents, students, and staff members convened online for the second annual Welcome Event for Families of Black Students on Wednesday, August 26. Hosted by the McDonogh Black Alumni Committee, in partnership with the McDonogh Parents Association's Equity and Inclusion Committee and the student-led Sankofa Club, the event provided a warm welcome for Black families new to McDonogh and outlined the School’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity. Additionally, members of McDonogh’s Black community shared personal insights in a panel discussion.
After heartfelt welcomes from Head of School Dave Farace ’87 and President of the Board of Trustees Rob Young ’86, McDonogh’s Director of Equity and Inclusion Dr. Lana Asuncion- Bates moderated a panel discussion with parent, student, and alumni leaders (listed below). Panelists answered questions, submitted in advance, that addressed topics such as the Black experience at McDonogh, available student resources, the purpose and work of the Black Alumni Committee, and the importance of parent involvement in the School community.
Bates concluded the event with sound advice for students saying, “We are a better community because of our diversity, because of all the unique experiences we have. Focus on being who you are, loving who you are, standing in your identity, and McDonogh will be better because of it.”
