While one era in McDonogh debate is nearing its end another has just begun. Nicholas Zuga ’20 and Dylan Wang ’20 are enjoying a strong final debate season as they were recently ranked ninth in the country in the Baker Poll. As McDonogh prepares to say goodbye to Nicholas and Dylan, a new cohort of eighth grade debaters is beginning to make a name for themselves. Zarina H. '24, Sophia W. '24, Caitlin R. '24, and Ria S '24. traveled to New York to compete in the Lakeland Invitational over the weekend of February 29 - March 1. Competing in the Novice Division of this high school competition, the eighth graders impressed with a strong performance. Zarina and Sophia were semifinalists with Zarina being named top speaker and Sophia listed as second. Caitlin and Ria were quarterfinalists with Caitlin named the 16th speaker overall and Ria listed at 27.
Avinash Thakkar ’21 and Alexander Jones ’22 made McDonogh debate history by being the first to clinch the #1 seed in the state debate championships. They will compete over spring break for the state title and a chance to represent Maryland in the National Catholic Forensic League championships in Chicago in May.
