More than 300 middle schoolers descended on McDonogh's campus on Saturday, February 1 to take part in the Baltimore Chesapeake chapter MATHCOUNTS competition. Ten McDonogh students participated in the event, four of whom worked together in the team round. McDonogh's team, comprised of Philemon K. '26, Jai B. '24, Camryn S. '24, and Cate A. '24 earned second place in the chapter. The team, along with individual qualifiers Ada M. '24 and Claire C. '24, will move on to the state competition at Johns Hopkins University on March 14--which all math lovers affectionally know as Pi Day.
The MATHCOUNTS competition began in 1983 and brings together students in grades six through eight in all US states and territories for a series of qualifying tournaments. The competition tests students' mathematical acumen through four rounds that focus on different abilities. McDonogh's team and individual qualifiers are happy with their performance in the chapter-wide competition and are now focused on the states with the hope of qualifying for the national competition.
