Congratulations to McDonogh School’s longtime Debate Team Coach Daryl Burch who was inducted into the University of Kentucky Tournament of Champions (TOC) Coaching Hall of Fame in a virtual ceremony on April 19. The TOC is the premiere high school speech and debate national championship, hosted each spring by the University of Kentucky Debate Team.
Burch was recognized for his coaching, debate championships, leadership, mentoring, and most importantly for revolutionizing debate on topics such as social justice. He is also known for breaking barriers for students of color in the formerly segregated arena of debate.
“He is everything the Hall of Fame is meant to acknowledge. He’s one of the most successful policy debate coaches ever and he’s done it at all levels,” said Director of the TOC Dave Arnett in presenting the award. “For 30 years his teams have been fiercely competitive and innovative in their style and approach to debate.”
Arnett continued, “He is a committed educator and one of the leaders in our community on issues of racial and social justice. Through his team’s arguments, judging, teaching during the summer, and presence in our lives, Daryl has helped to educate, open our eyes, and push our community and world to be better. His commitment to inclusion in debate has made him a hero.”
Throughout his career, Burch has coached countless McDonogh students to become skillful, confident orators in what seems like no time at all. Among his successful pairs of McDonogh debaters are 2017 TOC champions Ryan James ‘17 and Nishad Neelakandan ‘17.
As one former debate captain says, “DB really made sure to put a lot of emphasis on doing the right kind of learning and critical thinking that refuses cheap thought in favor of rigorous and determined research. DB hasn't just created a generation of hard-working scholars, he's worked toward cultivating a generation of critical intellectuals who are able to think through today's complex problems with crystal-clear clarity.”
