After an extraordinary 44 years of dedication, McDonogh’s current longest-tenured faculty member, Andy Motsko, is retiring. Mr. Motsko joined the Upper School Science Department in 1980 as a chemistry and biology teacher. He transitioned to physics in 1984 and for more than four decades, his warmth and easy-going demeanor, coupled with his passion for teaching, endeared him to generations of students.
Renowned for his ability to "teach the fear out of physics," Mr. Motsko revolutionized the freshman-year experience by introducing a conceptual approach that ignited curiosity and deep understanding. Throughout his tenure, he evolved his curriculum, integrating new and relevant topics, and implementing authentic assessment strategies that prepared students for the real world.
As Coach Motsko, he mentored athletes of all age levels in football, lacrosse, and golf. Emphasizing character-building both on and off the field, he has been an inspiration for his students, advisees, and players alike. His commitment goes beyond academics and athletics, as he supported the boarding community for more than two decades and organized cherished campus traditions like Halloween trick-or-treating.
In addition to his roles as an educator and coach, Mr. Motsko contributed significantly to the school community by serving on the Honor Council and the R-L Selection Committee, helping to establish McDonogh’s Mock Trial team, and mentoring numerous colleagues in the Science Department. His leadership as the Department Chair for 13 years and his involvement in the design and relocation to the Naylor Building underscore his commitment.
As Mr. Motsko enters retirement, his love for the Orioles, Ravens, and Terps, as well as his role as coordinator of Ocean City’s White Marlin Open fishing tournament, will undoubtedly continue to thrive. Alongside these passions, he looks forward to savoring sunsets and navigating the waters of the Magothy River on his new boat.
Mr. Motsko, your devotion to McDonogh over the years has left an indelible legacy. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for your dedication and unwavering commitment.
