In the fall of 1986, Libet Ottinger left the Admissions office at Bucknell University to sit on the other side of the desk as McDonogh's Director of College Counseling. Since then, she has forged connections with thousands of McDonogh students, initially as a college counselor, later as a class dean, and currently, once again, in her role as a college counselor. Among her list of college counselees are Dave Farace, Bridget Collins, and Merritt Livermore--just to name a few!
From her earliest days on campus, Mrs. Ottinger distinguished herself through her thoughtful approach and positive attitude. She has touched the hearts of students and faculty through her infectious laughter, boundless joy, and steadfast support of any endeavor. She seamlessly embodies the roles of counselor, educator, enthusiast, supporter, and pragmatist. She has guided students through high school's complexities, coached the cheerleading team, taught AP Human Geography classes, chaperoned Concert Choir trips abroad, and undertaken a myriad of other responsibilities. Mrs. Ottinger’s contributions to McDonogh are immeasurable.
With grace, composure, and always a story to share, Mrs. Ottinger has also taken on roles in McDonogh’s theatre productions including Peter & Wendy in 2016 and The Laramie Project in 2019. She played a pivotal role in the faculty and student group that established our Honor Code in 1990 and was instrumental in shaping the Advisory program. Additionally, she revitalized the Hundreds program for freshmen and seniors, provided guidance to the Black Awareness Club, and has been the leader of the Rollins-Luetkemeyer program, twice.
In June, Mrs. O will “graduate” from McDonogh and embark on new adventures beyond the familiar halls of Allan Building. While her absence will be felt, there is palpable excitement for her journey ahead. Thank you, Mrs. Ottinger, for putting us on the right path.
