Given all that she accomplished during her time at McDonogh, it's hard to believe that Upper School English teacher Michele McFarland has only been a part of our community for eight years. A dynamic and versatile educator, her journey here began as a part-time position and swiftly transitioned to full-time—a testament to her exceptional abilities both inside and outside the classroom.
Within the English Department, Mrs. McFarland emerged as the leader of the tenth-grade team. Using her experience as a journalist, she empowered sophomores to develop their voice and communicate effectively. During the pandemic, she seamlessly guided students from the traditional sophomore oratory to investigative essays—a process that fosters critical thinking. This essay process, involving research, writing, and sharing their new-found knowledge with peers, continues post-pandemic.
Mrs. McFarland's commitment to young minds, the art of communication, and the pursuit of equity and justice shines through in every project she undertakes. As the sponsor of the Gender Equity Movement Club, a visionary for the Peer Education program, and a driving force in elevating The Week from a co-curricular activity to an advanced course of study for juniors and seniors, she has left an indelible mark on student life.
Mrs. McFarland, we will miss your compassionate presence on the third floor of Allan Building, your many contributions to the English program, and your boundless energy in guiding students to discover and share their unique stories. We hope your retirement is filled with adventure and plenty of your own stories to tell.
