Susan Tanury - Retired Faculty & Staff - McDonogh School

Susan Tanury

When Sue Tanury walked onto our campus a quarter century ago, she presented a proposal for a role that included teaching responsibilities and the coordination of various spaces on campus, including events in the Horn Theatre, all-school ceremonies, pep rallies, and more. In her first few years at McDonogh, “Mama Sue,” as she is known to many, did all of that and more. Her unwavering commitment to the arts program and school-wide events laid the foundation for growth and efficiency across various facets of campus life.

She became a jack-of-all-trades and the go-to person when you need to "get stuff done." Over the past 25 years, she meticulously orchestrated numerous school events, showcasing her adaptability and expertise. Her love for theater permeated her every role, leaving an indelible mark on our productions and enriching the theatrical experience for our community.

One of Ms. Tanury’s remarkable legacies lies in the enduring impact of the programs she pioneered. Events like JamFest exemplified her ability to spark unity and community spirit, while initiatives such as "McDonogh TV," showcased her innovative spirit. Her passion for Halloween led to the creation of "Stage Fright," a haunted house staged in the Horn Theatre and zombie makeup tutorials for students. And, for years, she has been the creative genius behind each Head of School's Halloween costume. These endeavors underscore her unwavering commitment to infusing joy into every facet of McDonogh School life.

Today, as we express our deepest gratitude for Mama Sue's many contributions to McDonogh School, we also bid her farewell. Her legacy extends beyond the programs she initiated, touching countless lives as a mentor and guide. Please join me in wishing Sue Tanury a next act filled with the same humor,  joy, creativity, and warmth she shared with us for 25 years.
