McDonogh’s Middle School read, they recalled, and they rocked the 19th Annual Battle of the Books on Thursday, May 2 at Gilman School. All McDonogh Middle School students are encouraged to participate in the competition by reading at least three of the 10 books selected by area school librarians for the fifth/sixth and seventh/eighth grade reading levels. After reading the books, battlers compete in teams to answer questions about the story, characters, and author. Whether students make it to the final competition or not, the Battle of the Books increases motivation to read, boosts comprehension, and broadens their choice of reading material.
Congratulations to McDonogh’s five Middle School teams who earned top honors and to all those who participated.
Fifth grade fielded two teams of rookies in their first year of eligibility. Team #1: Abigail W., Ilana C., Sophia M., and Olivia O., competed against 11 other teams and earned a spectacular second place. Team #2: Philemon K., Aanya K., and Isabella F. battled hard against the other eleven other teams to win fifth place.
Out of eight teams, the sixth grade team of Ella N., Sophia P., Jackson D., and Lauren G. came from behind to earn an impressive second place finish.
In a nail biter, our spirited seventh grade team: Sophia S., Abby K., Nikoo N., and Caitlin R. earned first place for the third year.
Our dedicated veteran eighth grade team comprised of Will K., Gabby G., and Jada G., came in third place in their final Battle of the Books competition.
