The McDonogh Parents Association, in collaboration with the Office of Equity and Inclusion, teamed up with the Jewish Library of Baltimore to invite Liza Wiemer, author of The Assignment, to campus. Wiemer engaged with more than forty parents, faculty, and staff during a Lunch and Learn session, discussing her journey in writing The Assignment and advocating for the importance of being proactive against injustice. While the book is fictional, it draws from real-life events in a town near Oswego, where a teacher tasked high schoolers with arguing for the extermination of Jews, simulating SS Officers during the Holocaust.
Wiemer’s focus extended beyond antisemitism, with her resounding message emphasizing our collective responsibility in combating injustice. In her sessions with parents and later with the senior class, Wiemer urged vigilance in evaluating information sources and encouraged individuals to take a stand against all injustice. Her challenge resonated with both parents and students, emphasizing the need for critical thinking and the courage to speak out against inequity.
