(Cardboard) Anchors Aweigh!

For 42 student engineers, the race will mark the culmination of three weeks’ intense work to construct full-sized, seaworthy craft using only nine sheets of corrugated cardboard and certain other basic supplies. Six crews, ranging from five to twelve amateur boat builders, have mustered all of their decorative skills and knowledge of physics in hopes of winning the elusive Best Overall Boat trophy, affectionately known as “BOB,” at the awards ceremony following the race. Other accolades have traditionally included the Titanic award, presented to the best sinker.

The project is a voluntary, extracurricular activity. While the participants are all Upper School students, the event typically attracts spectators from all grades.
