Each team’s challenge: Plan a trip to the unspoiled island of Etsawon (that’s “no waste” spelled backwards), taking by boat no more than 90 pounds of supplies and returning with no more than 45 pounds of supplies and waste. Supply lists must include food, first aid, a light source, clothing, and shelter. Nothing may be left on the island.
Invariably, teams had to pare down supply lists because the items they wanted to take were too heavy. To rid their boat of 25 extra pounds, Andrew, Dave, and Tom switched bathing suits for jeans and decided to leave luxuries such as Game Boys and candy at home. Other groups made similar sacrifices. “We didn’t take our favorite foods because they weigh a lot,” said Lisa.
Next, teams had to describe their Etsawon survival experience in a creative way. Teams used video news clips, collages, Web pages, postcards to their teacher, scrapbooks, letters home to mom, a Survivor Times newspaper, song, and PowerPoint presentations to tell their stories.
Island survival is a theme in all sixth-grade classes this fall. McDonogh’s teachers created the interdisciplinary unit in 1998, long before the Survivor television series became part of pop culture.
