Middle School science teacher Halyna Reynolds was one of 4,727 U.S. educators--including 65 from Maryland--to be named a National Board Certified Teacher in November 2001. As such, she has earned the teaching profession's "highest credential," according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
To achieve this distinction of excellence, Reynolds participated in a rigorous, performance-based assessment that took her a year to complete. She submitted an extensive portfolio documenting her capability as a teacher. She also took eight hours of tests focusing on "content knowledge as well as age-appropriate and content-appropriate teaching strategies."
Pursuit of NBPTS certification is voluntary. The first 81 National Board Certified Teachers were named in January 1995, and with the November 2001 announcement, a total of 16,035 teachers are certified.
Reynolds joined McDonogh's Middle School faculty in September 2001.
