Michael S. '06 and Luisa S. '04 dazzled in the lead roles, as did Yasmene M. '04 as Anita, Nick M. '04 as Riff, Jon B. '04 as Bernardo, and Amy C.'05 as Anybodys. And veteran student dancers and singers playing Shark and Jet girls delivered excellent performances. The most delightful surprise came from the boys cast as Sharks and Jets. So impressive were they in dance and song that it was hard to tell the majority were new to theater.
In the adult roles, Headmaster Bo Dixon and faculty members Jon Aaron, Jesse Anderson, and John Grega drew cheers and applause.
At the end of the Sunday performance, the cast presented flowers to those behind the scenes. Seniors Lauren T. and Megan G. called choreographer Ilona Kessell forward and talked about the wonderful job she did to make the performers look so good. Megan, a dancer throughout her McDonogh career, also mentioned how glad she was that others in the community now knew what the dancers had known all along--that Ms. Kessell is very special.
Michael S. presented flowers to guest director Mo Dutterer, and Luisa S. thanked technical director Bill Toscano and his crew. Additional thanks went to props master Ane Lintvedt and ticket sales manager Sue Tanury. Finally, Nick M. commended fellow Jet Tristram T.'05, who aggravated a leg injury during Friday's prologue and was in the Sunday audience in a wheelchair, for his inspiring dedication and enthusiasm.
