A Celebration of the Class of 2008, Upperclassmen at Last

Members of the Class of 2008 celebrated their status as upperclassmen at the annual Junior Pin Dinner and Ceremony on October 11.

Students loved being the center of attention at the annual dinner in the dining hall, where their teachers served them an elegant chicken and pasta meal. They practiced some newly learned table manners, ate well, and laughed a lot. Casual banter with their teachers and Headmaster Bo Dixon made them feel even more special. At dinner’s end, classmates applauded their servers and gave the kitchen staff a standing ovation.

Then, it was off to the Ceres M. Horn Theatre to receive their McDonogh pins.

In opening remarks, class dean Libet Ottinger and class president Maria F. reflected on lessons from the class retreat two days before. Mrs. O. challenged them to appreciate one another, a prospect they could consider as they watched a slide show of images from their retreat. Each junior then walked across the stage to receive a brass McD lapel pin and a warm handshake from Mr. Dixon.

The headmaster, in his final year at McDonogh, received a surprise honor from the Class of 2008: a lapel pin of his own and a long ovation from all.

He, too, reminded the juniors of lessons learned at their retreat. The headmaster described a challenge that he laid down to the advisor group he accompanied. After watching them struggle with a team task for a while, he told them he would give the entire class a free dress day if the students could complete the task in two minutes or less.

Safe bet, he thought. Sure enough, the advisor group got the job done in 30 seconds, he reported.

The lessons: There is value is operating with a sense of urgency. Teamwork is a powerful thing.
