A Letter to Parents

Dear McDonogh Parents,
Are we ready for another great school year? The summer is flying by fast, and soon classes will begin. Fall teams begin pre-season practices shortly, and in a recent letter I asked for your help to make this year the best yet.

Lately I have been pondering the various roles that most of our teachers play here at the Eagle Nest. They are instructors, coaches, fathers, and mothers. When the bell rings at 3:00, many department heads, deans, and administrators head outside to their afternoon classrooms, the athletic fields. Moving from one role to another can be tough for all of us, but when we know which Ã????hatsÃ???? to wear in different situations, these transitions become smoother and less stressful.

Just like teachers, parents have many roles to fill, and being supportive and respectful sports fans is one of them. Last year we made "great sportsmanship" a primary goal, and we are still working to achieve it. This year, I ask for your cooperation when you attend games at McDonogh and on the road. These are my requests:

  • Be a fan of everyone on the team.
  • Respect the official's decision.
  • Respect other fans, coaches, and teams.
  • Talk to your children if they have concerns or questions about their experience on the team, and counsel them to speak directly with the coach.
  • Keep any negative thoughts about a coach, the program, or teammates to yourself.
  • Don't complain to coaches on a game day. Set up a time that is convenient for both of you to converse in private.
  • Understand that the coach's responsibility is to keep students safe while helping them become better people and athletes. The first priority is not to win every game! Be supportive of the coaches and trust that they know your child's ability and range of talent. Remember that our young people are students and NOT professional athletes. They will make errors in the course of competition, as will game officials and coaches. However, all participants are trying their best. Negative criticism and booing will not help them to improve and are UNACCEPTABLE forms of expression at a McDonogh athletic event. You can assist in their development as athletes by focusing attention on the positive aspects of their performance.

All of the coaches appreciate your cooperation and support. Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you on the sidelines this year. Go Eagles!
