Reading is Out of This World

Students are inducted into the program by the "Milky Way Space Command" of Mrs. Sartory and Mrs. Levy. The new STAR readers are encouraged to keep a Log Record of the books they have read, to be turned in to Space Command (the library) on a monthly basis. The program has met with overwhelming popularity. On October 18, STAR readers of grades K-4 gathered to recognize 220 outstanding readers. Virtually every child in the Lower School has signed up, eager to blast off and explore the world of reading. The Lower School also sponsors a reading incentive program for third and fourth grade students only. "Book Munchers" was begun last year by Mrs. Sartory, and aims to "broaden the student's view of the world and to offer windows into other lives and cultures." "Book Munchers" has proven successful this year as well, with sixty-six members meeting over lunch on a monthly basis to discuss selected books. Mrs. Sartory hopes that besides learning about literature and culture, students will be able to "share their own lives in an inclusive social setting."
