Awards Night Celebrates Athletics, Departing Coach Badham

Athletic Awards Night on June 7 was more than a celebration of team successes and athletes’ honors. It was also an opportunity to pay tribute to a departing coach known for his warmth and customary greeting, “It’s always a pleasure.”

For 25 years, Lynn Badham was a guiding presence in interscholastic sports, at Camp Red Eagle, and at summer sports camps. He decided to retire to care for elderly relatives out of state.

Colleague Jack MacMullan delivered an emotional goodbye to the man whose “smile is as wide as a river.” He told the audience how a young Badham excelled in football, basketball, and baseball in an all-black high school in rural North Carolina. “The white kids were cheated,” Coach Mac said, by not having a chance to play sports with Badham. A tearful MacMullan expressed the sentiments of all the coaches on stage when he said, “Thank you, Lynn Badham. It’s been our pleasure.” Then, Athletic Director Mickey Deegan awarded Badham a framed varsity letter.

Badham’s tribute capped off a triumphant evening, with athletes honored for sportsmanship and leadership as much as performance. Headmaster Bo Dixon set the tone in his opening remarks when he talked about how “athletics teaches humanity.” He used poignant examples of McDonogh players’ compassionate responses to the paralyzing 2004 football injury of Loyola Blakefield’s Van Brooks and the tragic death of former lacrosse player Matt Cowdrey ’03 in January 2005.

Mickey Deegan reminded the community that success isn’t always measured in winning the race. Still, she had many 2004-2005 wins to recall, including seven varsity team championships: boys’ soccer, boys’ indoor track, girls’ track, girls’ lacrosse, boys’ lacrosse, and boys’ tennis.
