Frindle by Andrew Clements

The pen may be mightier than the sword, but the frindle is mightier yet! At least that’s what Nick Allen thinks when he makes up the word frindle to replace pen, much to the dismay of his fifth-grade language arts teacher, dictionary devotee Mrs. Granger. The furor that follows makes for a story the students and teachers alike will cheer.

Greg is full of fear when he embarks on a white-water rafting trip with his father and his half brother, James. However, when his father gets bitten by a rattlesnake, Greg has to put aside his fear and take charge. It’s up to him and James to get down the river to safety.
