Boys’ Cross Country in the Running

McDonogh’s smallest varsity fall team – the seven seniors, one junior, and two freshmen of boys’ cross country – is also one of its mightiest.

The Eagles have not only won all their league dual meets, they’ve finished first in two big statewide invitationals, the September 22 Bull Run at Hereford High School and the October 12 Meade Autumn Classic in Anne Arundel County.

“We know how to train and run races now,” says Josh '02, individual winner of the Meade Autumn Classic, where four McDonogh runners placed in the top 11. Dedicated and committed to training together before and after school, they log from 40 to 50 miles a week during the season.

Each runner makes an impact on the team’s overall performance. “We don’t have a real superstar, just nine guys who are good, and on any given day, if one has a bad race, someone else picks up the slack,” adds Jamie '02. (Recently, the team lost one of its two freshmen for the season after he had surgery.)

Coach Jeff Sanborn has watched this team mature. “A number of these guys have been together from Middle School cross country. This team is dedicated to the sport, the goal of a championship, and each other,” he says. Their final test of the season is the MIAA Championship, November 7 at Oregon Ridge Park in Hunt Valley.
