Fifth-Grader Wins Geography Bee

Middle School Geography Bee 2002 To the delight of his classmates, Philip S. ‘09 made McDonogh history on Friday, January 11, when he became the first fifth-grader ever to win the middle school’s Geography Bee competition. He did it without missing a single question. “For a fifth grader, it’s unbelievable,” said social studies teacher Ted Scocos, who runs the school contest. Philip took a written test recently to see if he qualifies to compete at the state level.

More than 6,000,000 middle schoolers nationwide participate in the annual Geography Bee, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
