When Harry L. '10 started the Career Club in the fall of 2007, his ultimate goal was to sponsor a career day to help educate Upper School students about different careers available to them. On October 7, after months of planning, Career Day became a reality.
Twenty-seven professionals, many of whom were McDonogh parents and alumni, met with students and shared information about careers in medicine, technology, journalism, performing arts, education, law, architecture, business, media, finance, and science.
“A lot of my classmates already have some idea of what they want to do, and others, like me, still don’t know what career path to pursue. I thought that having a career day would give all of us an opportunity to learn more about what’s out there,” said Harry.
After spending the morning in breakout sessions with guest speakers, Upper School students gathered in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre to hear former Governor Robert Ehrlich talk about what it takes to have a successful career in public service. He told students that it is very important to be articulate and have principles, discipline, personal security, integrity, and mental toughness. Governor Ehrlich also stressed that in any career the ability to write and think critically is essential.
Students asked Governor Ehrlich impressive questions on a number of controversial issues, ranging from capital punishment and malpractice to the upcoming presidential election and the economy.
When asked how he dealt with his defeat in the 2006 election, Governor Ehrlich replied, “Defeat is a great test of your character and the character of the people around you.” He added, “Yes, it is a bummer, but as long as you have done your best you can live with yourself and feel satisfied.”
Ehrlich admitted that he really didn’t know whether he would ever run for office again, but the former Governor got a huge round of applause from Upper School students when he said, “If I do, I want Harry’s endorsement. He did a great job organizing Career Day.”
