The traditional baccalaureate service in Tagart Memorial Chapel featured faculty speaker Wright Abbott, who urged the Class of 2002 to understand and treasure connections to the McDonogh campus and its community. Said Abbot, "Revisit your youthful selves and all the ideals and dreams you possess this day, for if you maintain your roots, you can flourish wherever your life’s travels take you."
Their immediate travels took them to the field house, where a bagpiper announced their arrival and a gauntlet of teachers welcomed them with applause. Early in the ceremony, senior speaker Jamie Kaiser offered an insightful, personal reflection of his 12-year McDonogh education.
Soon-to-be-graduates collected their awards first, then their diplomas. They listened carefully to commencement speaker Irv Naylor '54, grandfather of Chet '02, talk candidly about the injury that paralyzed him and the possible cure he sees on the horizon.
The ceremony concluded with Concert Choir's moving rendition of the alma mater. About 20 alumni singers came from the audience to add their spirited voices. Then it was all cheers and hugs for the graduates.
Congratulations, Class of 2002!
