Donna Ward Receives Endowed Chair

The headmaster's remarks included warm testimonials from parents and his own recollections of the times Donna Ward has stepped up to the plate to make it work.

  • "In 1993 we asked, 'Would you do McDonogh School the honor of leading our first-ever kindergarten teaching team?' She said, 'Yes, I’ll make it work."
  • "In 1997 we asked, 'We are going to have four classes of kindergartners in September. Would you teach that fourth class in the space under the Kiplinger library?' She said, 'Yes, I’ll make it work.'"
  • "In 1998 we asked, 'We are going to have two classes of prefirst in September; would you teach that second class in the space under Kiplinger Library?' She said, 'Yes, I’ll make it work.'"
  • "In any year we ask, 'This child has applied for admission. We see some potential but there may also be problems. Should we admit him or her?' She always says, 'Yes, I’ll make it work.'"

McDonogh established its first endowed chairs in 1998 to reward great teaching and recognize individual faculty members for being vital to the school. Recipients hold these chairs for a period of three years and receive an annual stipend in addition to salary. McDonogh's fifth endowed teaching chair, named in honor of John Grega, was announced on August 26, 2003.

Cynthia Cox, holder of the Thomas Harper Endowed Chair, gleefully announced, "It's about time!" as she went to hug her friend.
