Eggs Benedict and English Class

What makes the last day of seniors' classes memorable? How about an elegant brunch in the dining hall in place of English class? That's what students in John Van Meter's spring term elective, A Vision of Main Street, got to enjoy on May 9. Their teacher invited them to a lavish feast of Eggs Benedict, fresh fruit, breakfast potatoes, and more.

“All this came to be because three quarters of my current seniors had no idea what Eggs Benedict consists of,” said the urbane host.

Students remember how Mr. Van, at random, asked them to write a recipe for Eggs Benedict one day. Some came pretty close to the traditional version, which requires poached eggs, Canadian bacon, English muffins, and Hollandaise sauce. Others were more creative than accurate. At least all included eggs.

While the seniors saw no obvious connection between Eggs Benedict and class readings from Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology, they were nonetheless delighted with their teacher's gesture. They enjoyed the gracious dining, the opportunity to converse with classmates and invited guests, and the chance to thank Mr. Van with an ice-water toast and farewell handshakes.
