The protocol for when to remove and don jackets was added to the other last-minute instructions given in Tagart Memorial Chapel on Friday, June 8. It was going to be a scorcher. After the girls accepted their roses and helped their classmates with their boutonnieres, the 140 members of the Class of 2007 walked proudly behind departing Headmaster Bo Dixon through the chute of applauding faculty, down to Childs Memorial Terrace, and into McDonogh history.
Class president Matt Hellauer introduced the senior speaker, Greg Bernstein, who encouraged his classmates to be in the moment fully and then to let it go and make something of themselves, “to do the greatest possible amount of good.” The Promise of Living sung by The Concert Choir afterward echoed that sentiment.
The promise of living, the promise of growing,
The promise of ending is labor and sharing and loving.
The receiving of diplomas was punctuated by many family moments; an elaborate hand smacking routine by Head of Upper School Ceil Millar and her son Kam; a hug between former headmaster Bob Lamborn ’35 and his granddaughter Taylor; the giving of congratulatory embraces by board members Steve Fader, Dee Curran ’74, Howard Klein ’76, and Donna Staton to their respective children Michael, Gerrit, David, and Brooke; board member Sarah Manekin '94 to her brother Ben; and McDonogh Parents Association President Laurie Kelly to daughter Casey. As final member of the Class of 2007 Brad Zink stepped onto Childs Memorial Terrace, he looked up to find the headmaster's arms fully open.
In his remarks, Dixon also exhorted the graduates to drink in the moment, as he assured them he was doing, and then to think “about your next journey – your next goal/dream and get after it.” He provided signposts for the trip, reminding them to contribute to the community they love; balance hard work, self-discipline and fun; and to be their real selves at all times.
They, in turn, provided him with a signpost of his own. Kirstyn Atkinson and Emily Zgorski, representing A to Z in their class, presented both Ann and Bo Dixon with framed diplomas and announced them honorary members of the Class of 2007.
Again from The Promise of LivingClass of 2007, you are our seeds. Grow with the knowledge that we love you. We confidently await the blessings of our harvest.
