Fifth- and Eighth-Graders Celebrate Friendship

Remarks eighth-grader Alison S., “Fifth-graders and eighth-graders usually don’t mix well together.” To bring the grades closer together, fifth-graders were paired with “siblings” in the eighth grade. With Eighth Grade Leaders doing the organizational heavy lifting, members of both grades have met throughout the year to share pizzas and conversation. Friday’s field day, which included floor hockey and kickball, was the final get-together of the year.

Jon Aaron and Cathy Schorreck, faculty sponsors of the Eighth Grade Leaders, admire their students for organizing Big Brother/Big Sister. Participants now feel comfortable greeting one another between classes, and according to Aaron, “that casual conversation goes a long way.” In addition, fifth-graders have enjoyed learning that their older siblings share many of their own concerns, like heavy backpacks and hallway traffic. Says Aaron, “It’s been a nice way for the fifth-graders and eighth-graders to get to know one another.”
